Happy first day of spring! I love the longer sunny days that we've been having. Day 20 of #marchmeetthemaker is design process. This is actually really great timing, because I just posted a short story of how I came up with a colorful modern office design. I had a poll in my stories of what to design (office or bedroom) and what style (classic or colorful modern). I'm glad colorful modern won, because that's what I love! I usually start a design with a piece of furniture or art or rug. If the client wants to keep certain pieces, then that is where I start. For my office example I started with a colorful rug with lots of texture. I knew I wanted to 'virtually' splurge on a kick ass vintage MCM desk and chair so they were next. I then added some artwork and objects that were inspired by our recent trip to Palm Springs and Joshua Tree. .

The design process of quilting is usually to first pick the fabrics. I have so much fabric and I have been trying to just use what I have without buying anything new. The only exception is solids, I do have to buy more of them. I like to pick fabrics that coordinate, but are not too matchy matchy. I then get a general idea of what the quilt will look like and start sewing. I don't use patterns or anything, I just sew. The pattern for the one I'm working on now was actually inspired by this antique rug which I used as a wall hanging. This rug art would actually work great as a starting point for a room design. The quilt I'm making is to replace the one here, which I know doesn't really match. As you can see, this is one of Winnie's many sleeping spots. .
