Powder Room One Room Challenge: Week One

May 7, 2020 | Bathroom, House, One Room Challenge

I am participating in the Spring 2020 One Room Challenge! It’s a fun event where you post about a space that you are redecorating (or fully renovating) over a 6 week period. I already wanted to redecorate our powder room so the timing is perfect. And I really don’t need to do that much so it’ll be nice to have a reason to spread out the timing of this project.

Here are the before pictures.

One Room Challenge Powder Room Before

I love the horizontal window in this room, but 1/3 of it was covered by this cabinet that was hiding a gas meter.

One Room Challenge Powder Room Before, Gas meter

The week before COVID19 shut down our country, the gas company came to replace the gas line, move the meter to the outside as per code, and replace the main gas line by the street. The first two happened, and they could run the new line through the existing line without tearing up the entire drive way, hooray! However, they couldn’t replace the gas main line by the street, because it kept filling with water. They dug a GIGANTIC hole that took up a large part of the end of our driveway and yard and then haphazardly put it back together. It’s a bit of a bummer that the front of our yard is all torn up, but you know, GLOBAL PANDEMIC. It seems some of our neighbors are more upset about it than we are. We are hoping that one day they will finish the job.

The current situation in this bathroom really isn’t bad at all, but there are two main areas that I wanted to address. 1) The left corner had that counter cabinet that hid the gas meter. I am so pumped that they moved the meter to the outside so that we could get rid of the cabinet. It felt clunky and the window actually spans the entire wall, so it’ll also let in more light. A pipe is still there, but I plan to just paint it. And 2) the mirrors were hung high and I am short, so I could never see myself in the mirror unless I was on my tippy toes. I don’t often mind being short, but I really hate it when I can’t see myself in a bathroom mirror. This actually happens in restaurant bathrooms a lot (I’m looking at you Memphis Taproom!)

My color palette is below, along with my beer (lol). In case you didn’t know, you can call in and order to your local Sherwin-Williams and they will get it ready for you so you can just pick it up outside. The counter tops are staying and I picked up these handles at an Estate Sale without knowing where to put them and this room is perfect. One less thing to try and find and buy.

After I had picked the colors, I was looking through photos from our trip to New Orleans and realized that the colors are very much a part of the city. When I was there I kept thinking, I should design a room around this, and apparently I did without even realizing it.

I am very thankful that we got to go on a trip in January to one of our favorite cities before this pandemic, New Orleans.

Design Plan:

Keep: Flooring, sink, counter tops

Do or buy:

Paint the walls white

Add a @banyanbridges inspired painted wall art

Replace faucet

Paint pipe

Add baseboard trim

Cover electrical panel

Find a new mirror (I was going to use one that I already had below, but Dave doesn’t’ like it)

Tablescape Inspiration

Our favorite holiday to host is Thanksgiving. This year I started my table planning early due to a brand post that I did with Allem Studio. They sent me some of their beautiful block-printed linens and I created a tablescape to showcase them. Since this is...
